Plagiarism & AI Policy

Plagiarism & AI Ethics Policy

1. Anti-Plagiarism Policy
In adherence to the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan’s quality assurance standards, GMR
maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding plagiarism. All manuscripts undergo rigorous screening before being processed for peer review.
Mandatory Thresholds (via Turnitin):
Overall Similarity Index: Must not exceed 19%.
Single Source Similarity: Must be less than 5%.
Types of Misconduct: Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, verbatim copying, paraphrasing without
attribution, "salami slicing" (self-plagiarism), and data fabrication. If misconduct is identified post-publication, GMR will issue a formal retraction and notify the author's parent institution.
2. Policy on Generative AI Tools
GMR acknowledges the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in research. However, to preserve authorship integrity and intellectual accountability, the following rules apply:
A. Authorship & Accountability: AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) cannot be listed as an author or
co-author. Authorship implies legal and ethical responsibility that can only be fulfilled by humans.
B. Permissible Use: AI may be used to enhance the readability, grammar, and technical language of a
manuscript. It must not be used to create original research findings, interpret results, or draw conclusions.
C. Mandatory Disclosure: Authors must disclose the use of AI in a dedicated section before the references.
This should specify the tool used and the nature of its contribution.
3. Guidelines for Reviewers regarding AI
Reviewers are strictly prohibited from uploading any part of a submitted manuscript into a Generative
AI tool.
Submitting an author's unpublished work into a public AI interface violates confidentiality and intellectual
property rights. Reviewers must perform evaluations based on their own expert judgment.
